Why Sensory Play Is Important

Experts say that children learn best and retain the most information when they engage their senses. Sensory exploration is a child’s way of examining, discovering, categorizing, and making sense of the world.  At Peter Pan, we take that to heart by providing sensory experiences throughout the day.

Sensory play enables children to:

•    Exercise pre-writing and fine motor muscles as they pour, spoon, squeeze and mix
•    Develop eye-hand coordination while manipulating a variety of materials
•    Use descriptive and expressive language
•    Discover meaning in descriptive words
•    Gain confidence to experiment and learn

Through sensory table media, concoction recipes, process art, and other experiences provided in our classrooms and our outdoors, the children are exposed to different textures and reactions. Whether engaging with slime, gak, clay, dough, or a simple water experience, our classes certainly have plenty of opportunities to see, touch, and explore with sensory media.

Some other ways that we engage our classes in sensory experiences include:

✓    Our Little Learners and Pre-K classes measure and mix ingredients to create their own weekly concoction each Monday.  This is a hands-on learning experience of measuring and mixing, to create something gooey, stretchy or squishy to use throughout the week.

✓    In our weekly “Child Made” Healthy Snack, the children are exposed to different foods, consistencies, and flavors that they may not otherwise try.  Children touch and cut their own foods, arrange them per the recipe, andthen discover how tasty they are.

✓    Hands-on science and nature experiences expose our classes to the sights, smells, and textures of our world. Participating in growing centers, raising butterflies, and experiments that bubble, fizz and change are just some of the learning adventures folded into our curriculum!

✓    Sensory experiences extend into our outdoor world at Peter Pan as well. We have made it our mission to make our playgrounds more than just climbing equipment.  Come and tour and see a real playground in action.
